Can a modern Chinese person understand and read Chinese from the Tang Dynasty? If not, how far back in time can you understand?
Well, I think an educated person can read Chinese from the Tang dynasty, even the handwritten manuscripts. Of course, there is some difficult terminology. For example, 大家 now means everybody, but in the Tang, it was used in the palace to refer to the Emperor.
